The eWorldwide group is organizing a thematic workshop on ‘Acceleration of Girls Education and Rights to Ensure Sustainable Gender Empowerment through ICTs’ at WSIS Forum, Geneva, Switzerland on 5th May 2016 at 3.00 pm to 4.30 pm

Description of the Session:

Knowledge, information and critical thinking are the basic foundations to enable sustainable empowerment of women. Therefore, it stands to reason that if we are to overcome decades of rhetoric and lack of progress in obtaining equity and equality for women, we need to start early in addressing the challenges and barriers young girls encounter.

A paradigm shift needs to be developed that is practical, simple and cost effective manner to help overcome the cultural and traditional barriers that prevent girl’s education, empowerment and inclusion in society.

ICTs are playing a pivotal role in transforming the landscape of the education sector by fast tracking ‘access and delivery of quality education’ to rural communities, particularly supporting developing countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This session will be conducted in an interactive manner to maximize the participants’ engagement with the international multi-stakeholder panelists from the private sector, government, civil society and development agencies.

Outcomes:

This interactive session will highlight case studies and share practical examples on how ICTs have been used to accelerate girl’s access to education and overcome cultural barriers;

  • How ICTs have changed the landscape for girls access to quality education and information
  • How access to education is building the foundation for critical thinking, awareness of girls rights and developing their inspirations and aspirations for their future
  • How ICTs are providing new avenues to overcome cultural challenges and barriers that prevent girls access to education
  • How ICTs are having a multiplier effect in the education sector by providing access to quality education in rural communities with limited resources, infrastructure and providing virtual teachers
  • How ICTs have changed the landscape for girls access to quality education and information

The Chairperson and CEO, eWWG present ICT Policy Statement at the world summit on the Information Society + 10 (WSIS+10) at Centre International Conference Geneva (CICG), ITU Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland, June 2014

Policy Statement: Dr. Salma Abbasi, Chairperson and CEO, eWorldwide Group Reflecting on the challenges and outcomes from WSIS, there is no doubt in my mind that it is essential to have comprehensive, inclusive, cross-cutting and integrated policies that reflect reality to ensure holistic sustainable development. However, my experience sadly demonstrates that many development policies remain in the ‘theoretical space’ and are often disconnected from the ground reality and practical social cultural constraints that impact the most vulnerable groups in society namely; the children, the women, the people with special needs and the elderly. Thus, the desired outcomes and impact of policies are greatly hindered and missed. I would therefore like to recommend that for WSIS +10 we pay greater attention to ensure that policies are practical, inclusive, implementable and most importantly measureable. Furthermore, greater consideration needs to be given for consultation and engagement to occur within and across all groups of society during the policy formulation process. I also believe that it is critical to develop more comprehensive policy implementation frameworks in the local national context. In addition, measureable holistic impact indicators at the social level need to be developed and more importantly reported on a regular basis. This will help encourage Countries to begin monitoring the impact aspects of their policies across the most vulnerable groups of society post implementation. Lastly, we must remember to keep in mind that policies need to be ‘fluid and dynamic’ to adapt to the ever changing environment of the digital society.
